5J Faces of Impact - Collaboration

5J Faces of Impact
Each month, we highlight staff who help shape the future — one student, one moment, one connection at a time.

What Collaboration Means in Weld RE‑5J — and Why It Matters
In Weld RE‑5J, collaboration is more than a meeting on a calendar—it’s a commitment to ensuring every student learns at high levels. When staff collaborate, students benefit from the combined expertise, creativity, and care of an entire team—not just one classroom teacher. This month in 5J Faces of Impact, we highlight how staff across Weld RE‑5J come together to support students, elevate learning, and live out our commitment to continuous improvement.

OuR Graduate Spotlight: RESPONSIBLE

In 5J, responsibility shines in every classroom, hallway, and community space. We’re celebrating the many ways our students and staff bring the OuR Graduate characteristic of being RESPONSIBLE to life—through their actions, leadership, and commitment to learning and growth.

Stacking Up Skills for the Future

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from Elwell Elementary, Milliken Intermediate, and Pioneer Ridge came together for the 21st Annual Speed Stacking Competition—and WOW did they bring the energy!

Yes, it was a competition… but the real victories were in the perseverance, goal setting, teamwork, and encouragement we saw at every single table. These are the exact skills we want for OuR Graduates, and our students showed them in record‑breaking amounts.

Bonus: our 5th graders got an early chance to build relationships with the classmates they’ll join next year at Roosevelt Middle School. New friendships = already stacking success for the future! And while the cups were flying fast, the connections were built even faster.

Five Years of Building Futures Together

Spaces that Inspire. Learning that Lasts.

For the past five years, Weld RE-5J has worked hand-in-hand with our community to create environments where every learner—and every educator—feels a deep sense of belonging. With the support of the community and voters, the passing of the 2020 Bond allowed multiple capital projects and maintenance improvements to launch. These enhancements are not just about buildings; they are about opportunities for growth, passion, and preparing for the future. Together, we have ensured that our schools are safe, accessible, welcoming, and designed for collaboration and innovation. Every improvement reflects our shared commitment: to extend the life of our facilities, reduce costly repairs, and provide spaces that are developmentally appropriate, aesthetically pleasing, and ready for tomorrow. We are proud to celebrate that journey—and the community that made it possible.

Future Chef

5J is thrilled to celebrate our young culinary stars following this year’s Future Chef Competition, themed Passport to Flavor—inviting students in grades 3–5 to create delicious recipes inspired by cultures from around the world.

At the district cook‑off on February 26, students impressed our panel of judges with originality, healthy choices, presentation, and taste. We are proud to announce the 2026 winners:
🏆 1st Place: Abel Aleman (MIS)
🥈 2nd Place: Joseph Hull (MIS)
🥉 3rd Place: Brooklynn Cunningham (KQA)

District Finalists:
• Danyca Milosky‑Rivera (EES)
• Alexander Juarez (PRE)
• Hannah Olsen (PRE)
• Ellianna Hinrichs (EES)

All finalists received chef gear and special gifts as they showcased their skills in a fun and supportive competition environment. The winning recipe will also move on to be considered in Sodexo’s national competition this spring!

MIS student receiving challenge coin from SRO
Going Above and Beyond!

Aiden was nominated by his assistant principal at MIS: Each lunch since about November 1st Aiden chose to work for the school. Each and every lunch he clears his lunch then quickly gets to his feet and starts helping our custodians. He sweeps some days, or picks up trash left there by other students. He’s always ready to help with carrying trays. Most of the other kids don’t even say “thank you” but he does it anyway. He is a shining example that we as people can be better to others. Oftentimes he has to miss a couple minutes of his recess as a consequence of helping and he has told me many times he doesn’t care. He’s the first person I thought of when you said “someone who goes above and beyond".

Historically, challenge coins have been presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit, or the unit as a whole. Keep an eye out for these special coins, which feature the Johnstown and Milliken Police Department badges, as well as our school logos. These coins will be awarded by our School Resource Officers who witness or hear of students going above and beyond, exemplifying the traits that we look for in our graduates, and just being wonderful humans.

These coins have been funded by the Bullying Prevention and Education Grant.

Ribbon Cutting!

Celebrating Learning: SmartLab Ribbon Cutting

“Here our students will have that chance to code, design, and dream to see that science, technology, engineering, and math are not just subjects in schools but are keys to understanding and shaping the world around them.” -Nate Sassano, Weld RE-5J Board of Education Vice President

“This is a space where you can ask questions, wonder together, and imagine new solutions. The opportunities you have here to plan, to create, to communicate, will help prepare you to thrive and compete in an ever changing world.” -Scott Nielsen, Superintendent of Schools

Thank you to our partners, SmartLab Learning and Weld Trust, for helping make this happen and investing in our students’ learning!
